SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HALF ARABIAN ASSOCIATION SHOW CHANGES VENUE
The Southern California Half Arabian Association Arabian & Half Arabian Horse Show has changed location due to an EHV1 virus at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, California. The show will now be hosted at Del Mar Show Park in Del Mar, California.
The show's dates are January 20-22, 2017, and the schedule will include classes for sport horse, dressage, youth, amateur, hunter/jumper, trail, Western dressage and ranch horse pleasure.

FOUR ARABIAN HORSE INDUSTRY LEADERS NOMINATED FOR 2016 USEF EQUESTRIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD
Every year, the United States Equestrian Federation honors top equestrian leaders on their numerous accomplishments and achievements within the horse industry through various awards. One of the most coveted awards, the Equestrian of the Year Award, is an ultimate goal for many horsemen and women in the industry.

INAUGURAL ARABIAN & HALF-ARABIAN REGIONAL BREEDING CHALLENGE CUPS AWARDED
The inaugural Regional Breeding Challenge Cups were recently awarded at the 2016 Arabian Horse Association's Arabian & Half-Arabian U.S. National Championship Horse Show. Bronze trophies were handed out based on an accumulation of points by horses showing at the U.S. Nationals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The AHA membership is divided into 18 geographical regions across North America. Regions 1 through 18 had horses attending and representing their breeders at this year's show, and as the horses placed in their classes, they accumulated points for their respective region and breeders.

AHA DISTANCE NATIONALS TO HOST MORE BREEDS, CHANGE NAME TO DISTANCE HORSE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Arabian Horse Association Distance Nationals has recently started hosting additional breeds' National Distance Championships. To better reflect and describe the event, the AHA National Distance Commission has decided to change the name of the overall event, while keeping the name AHA Distance Nationals to describe the AHA Championship rides.

The Southern California Half Arabian Association will be hosting its Arabian & Half Arabian Horse Show, January 20-22, 2017 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank, California. Entries close on January 4, 2017.

AMERICAN HORSE COUNCIL TO OFFER INTERNSHIPS IN 2017
In 2017, the American Horse Council (AHC) will begin offering three different internship programs available to both high school and college students. Students will be eligible to apply to one internship per year in the AHC Internship Program.

USEF NAMES JUNIOR EQUESTRIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER
The United States Equestrian Federation has named Elizabeth “Lizzy” Traband as the 2016 Junior Equestrian of the Year. Growing up on a sport horse breeding and training farm, horses have always been a part of 18-year-old Traband's life. Despite being born with only one hand, Traband has not let anything limit her passion for horses. She has successfully competed in dressage, hunters, jumpers, and para-dressage. Traband is also an entrepreneur, having founded EPN Global and Taiji Horsemanship. A prime example of courage, sportsmanship, and dedication, Traband will be awarded the Ruth O'Keefe Meredith Memorial Trophy as the 2016 Junior Equestrian of the Year.

Stallion reports are another tool that the Arabian Horse Association uses to implement its mission to keep accurate and current records, a responsibility in maintaining the integrity of the breed. A stallion report is also a requirement for the registration of the upcoming foal.

U.S. SADDLE SEAT YOUNG RIDERS TEAMS ATTEND FIRST TRAINING SESSIONS
In preparation for the 2017 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational/Test Event, the U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams attended their first training sessions at Cascade Stables in New Orleans, Louisiana, and High Caliber Stables in Greensboro, North Carolina. This was the first opportunity the riders and coaches came together to work and train as teams. It also afforded riders the opportunity to prepare for competition by riding multiple horses unfamiliar to them, just as they will at the Invitational/Test Event.

SWEEPSTAKES 2017 IN-UTERO NOMINATIONS DUE DECEMBER 31
The deadline to enroll a 2017 in-utero foal as a Breeding Entry for $400 is December 31, 2016 (postmarked/electronic transaction dated). Late enrollments will be accepted postmarked/electronic transaction dated January 1 through February 15th the year the foal is due with an additional $100 late fee. Nominations postmarked/electronic transaction dated after February 15 will not be accepted.
Every fourth Breeding Entry enrolled in the same year by the same owner may be enrolled at one half price. The discount applies to each submission of at least four entries submitted at the same time. Forms can be found online.

U.S.-BRED HORSE WINS WORLD'S RICHEST ARABIAN HORSE RACE
The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown, the world's richest Arabian race with a purse of €1.2 million, not surprisingly drew the top-rated Arabian racehorses in the world last Sunday to Abu Dhabi. The field of 16 horses including eight Group 1 winners, including Al Mourtajez, who is rated the #1 Arabian racehorse by handicap ratings (134) and earnings and is well-known for taking the $1 million Qatar Arabian World Cup in France this past October.

The Arabian Horse Association’s Annual Membership Convention was held November 16-19 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Hyatt Regency Tulsa.

CAHR TO SHUT DOWN OPERATIONS IN ALBERTA, SHIFT TO DENVER
The Canadian Arabian Horse Registry -- founded in 1958 -- has been the official Registry of both Purebred and Partbred Arabian horses in Canada for many years. The Arabian horse breeders and participants in our country have been leaders and ground breakers in this Worldwide industry for many years.
Over the last 50 years, we have witnessed the world around us change at a rapid pace. Many horse breeds today are seeing significant declines in breeding, racing and showing activity. Sadly, our Arabian breed has not been immune to these rapid declines.

USEF VOTES TO SUPPORT OLYMPIC FORMAT CHANGES AT FEI GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The United States Equestrian Federation voted at the November 22 FEI General Assembly to support changes to the Olympic format for equestrian sport.
The biggest change in format across all three Olympic disciplines involved the number of riders per team and how they are scored. In the previous format, there were four riders that participated on each team with a drop score in each round of competition. Under the newly approved format, there will be three riders per team and no drop score. The active reserve can be substituted into the competition at the beginning of any phase of competition.

USEF ADDS DIAMANTE FARMS TO LIST OF ELITE TRAINING CENTER DESIGNATION LOCATIONS
The United States Equestrian Federation has announced that Diamante Farms, located in Wellington, Florida, has been accepted into the USEF Elite Training Center Designation Program. The program allows venue owners, who have hosted at least one USEF-sanctioned team, developing rider or horse training session, in one of the eight FEI disciplines, within the last year to apply for Elite Training Center status. These venues have been instrumental in providing USEF high performance training sessions aimed at developing and preparing teams to compete internationally.

AHC ANNOUNCES NEW STUDENT MEMBERSHIP
Starting in January 2017, the American Horse Council (AHC) will be offering a new membership option available to students only.
The student membership will be available to both high school and college students, and membership will be subject to verification; only full-time enrolled students are eligible for this special student membership.

JUDGING BACK TO BACK SHOWS - This clarification has been added to the AHA Handbook and AHA One Day Show Rules.
Recognized Judges may not adjudicate in back-to-back AHA-recognized shows unless they are not adjudicating the same type of classes. Class type is defined by:
Sections - Western, English/Country English, Hunter, Reining, Trail, etc.
By sex for Breeding/In-Hand - Stallion, Mare, Gelding.
For example: A judge may adjudicate Western Pleasure and Stallion Breeding at the first show and then could adjudicate English/Country English

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WRAP UP IN TULSA
The 50th Anniversary of the Arabian Horse Association's U.S. National Arabian & Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show wrapped up two weekends ago at Tulsa Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
More than 1,751 horses and 7,000 exhibitors, support staff and participants flocked to Expo Square to celebrate 50 years of U.S. National Champions. Nearly 3,246 stalls were used for horses, elaborate barn set-ups and temporary living spaces. Owners and exhibitors hailed from 46 U.S. States and five Canadian provinces, with several horses coming from overseas to exhibit. The Tulsa Convention and Visitor's Bureau estimates that the Arabian U.S. National Show brings, on average, $35 million to the city of Tulsa each year.

2016 ARABIAN HORSE JUDGING CONTEST RESULTS ANNOUNCED
The results are in for the 46th annual Arabian Horse Youth Judging Contest, sponsored by Awards Recognition Concepts, and hosted at the 2016 U.S. National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show.
This year at the contest in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 23 teams and more than 94 individuals, from all over the country competed on October 28, 2016 for their chance at a National title. The youth were asked to judge six performance classes, four halter classes, including Half-Arabians and purebreds, and present four sets of oral reasons. TIME TO RIDE WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Time to Ride is an initiative of the American Horse Council's Marketing Alliance designed to connect new people to horses and grow participation across the entire horse industry. This year, the Arabian Horse Association partnered with Time to Ride on its largest program, the Time to Ride Challenge. The Challenge offered $100,000 cash and prizes to the stables, clubs, and businesses who introduced non-riders to horses and riding. AHA offered an additional $5,000 just for members of AHA who competed in the Challenge. The Challenge opened on April 1, and took place from June 1 through September 30.

NOMINATION DEADLINE FOR DISTANCE HORSE OF THE YEAR AWARD APPROACHING
The Distance Horse of the Year Award is presented to an Arabian, Half-Arabian or Anglo-Arabian horse for outstanding achievements in distance events for the current year. The award recipient is honored by a name plate on the perpetual trophy and listed on the Arabian Horse Association's website. In addition, the owner of the horse receives a take-home trophy to display. The winner of the award will be chosen at the AHA's Annual Convention. USEF ANNOUNCES 2017 U.S. SADDLE SEAT YOUNG RIDERS TEAMS COACHES
The United States Equestrian Federation has announced the selection of the coaches for both of the 2017 U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams. The coaching team of Avery Bul, Scott Matton and Michelle McVey Haisch will oversee the training of the Stars team. Devon Garone, Kristin Logan and Christy Parker are tasked with coaching the Stripes team. The teams will compete separately at the 2017 U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational/Test Event on April 3-6 in Perry, Georgia.

USEF HIGHER EDUCATION EQUESTRIAN SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED
The United States Equestrian Federation is pleased to announce the five recipients of the USEF Higher Education Equestrian Scholarship for graduating high school seniors presented by Elisabeth Goth. In its second year, the scholarship program was created to support students who intend to continue their equestrian careers during college, either through an equestrian-related degree or by riding on an intercollegiate equestrian team. Each recipient receives a $1,000 grant toward his/her education at the respective college or university.
The five recipients are:
Jenna Martin of Somers, Connecticut, attending James Madison University to study finance and compete on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team.

USEF SUBMITS COMMENT ON USDA'S PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO HORSE PROTECTION REGULATIONS
The United States Equestrian Federation has submitted a comment in response to the United States Department of Agriculture’s proposed amendments to the regulations that implement the Horse Protection Act. In its comment, the USEF seeks to partner with the USDA in the eradication of soring in equestrian sport. The USEF commends the USDA in its efforts to strengthen the regulations and further protect horses from the practice of soring. Dedicated to upholding horse welfare, this comment is a part of the USEF’s on-going efforts to modify and implement rules that eliminate cheating, doping, and abuse in the sport.

SPORT HORSE NATIONALS WRAP-UP
The Arabian Horse Association's 14th Annual Arabian & Half-Arabian Sport Horse National Championship Horse Show, the only breed show specifically for sport horses, wrapped up this past weekend in Nampa, Idaho.
Held at the Ford Idaho Horse Park, Sport Horse Nationals' West Coast rotation site, this annual event boasted 386 horses and more than 1,770 entries. Arabians, Half-Arabians and Anglo-Arabians hailed from 31 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces. Showcasing the sport disciplines of the breed, horses competed in all levels of Dressage, Hunter classes on the flat and over fences, Jumping, Carriage Driving, Sport Horse Under Saddle, Sport Horse Show Hack and Sport Horse In-Hand.

AHA'S LETTER AND POSITION STATEMENT CONCERNING THE HORSE PROTECTION ACT
Many Arabian Horse Association members are aware of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) recently proposed changes to the regulations governing enforcement of the Horse Protection Act (HPA).
A 60-day Public Hearing and Public Comment period began. This comment period has been extended and ends October 26, 2016 at which time the USDA will review comments, make any revisions/changes, and finalize the Rule. Because the HPA is already a law, there is no Congressional vote.
AHA is adamantly opposed to any cruel or abusive actions that endanger the welfare of any horses. We support the effort to eliminate soring and other abusive practices.

USEF RELEASES CONCUSSION SAFETY INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND COACHES
The United States Equestrian Federation’s USEF.org has many concussion safety information resources to help parents and coaches recognize, respond to, and minimize the risk of serious brain injury.
The USEF continues to work together with the CDC to educate equestrians on concussion safety. Below is more information for parents and coaches and tips on how to keep their athletes safe, how to spot a possible concussion, and what to do if a rider has incurred one.

USEF ANNOUNCES 2017 U.S. SADDLE SEAT YOUNG RIDERS TEAMS
The United States Equestrian Federation is pleased to announce the selection of the 2017 U.S. Saddle Seat Young Riders Teams. The USEF received nearly 100 applications from around the country. After extensive review by the selection committee, two teams of 12 riders were chosen to compete at the U.S. Saddle Seat Invitational/Test Event on April 3-6, 2017, at the Georgia National Fairgrounds in Perry, Georgia. The event will feature two competitions with each U.S. squad facing at least one team from a different country. South Africa and Canada have confirmed participation in the Invitational.

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINE OCTOBER 1
If you competed at the 2016 Youth National Arabian and Half-Arabian Championship Horse Show, visit the Arabian Horse Foundation's website to apply for a special scholarship. Equine Athlete Veterinary Services has generously funded a scholarship in the amount of $1,000.
So get yourself over to the Arabian Horse Foundation's website www.thearabianhorsefoundation.org and follow the Foundation's application procedures. You will need to prove you competed at the 2016 Youth Nationals. The applications are due October 1st.

USEF ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS
The United States Equestrian Federation is seeking nominations for two seats on the Board of Directors. Nominations will be accepted September 15 through October 31, 2016. In order to be eligible for nomination, the individual must meet the definition of "Independent Director," as described in USEF Bylaw 303.
Nominations may be submitted online by active USEF members. Visit usef.org for more information about how to submit a nomination.
